and Turning Stock.

Carving blocks-

The best Basswood and Butternut trees we buy are sawn into carving stock. We produce 1", 2", 3",  and  4" thick pieces depending on the size and quality of the logs. All blocks are cut to avoid pith (the center of the tree) which makes them more stable. Since these woods are readily kiln dried, our blocks are ready for immediate use. Other species are occasionally available (Catalpa, Poplar, etc.)
Pricing of carving blocks is by the cubic inch of material.

Turning stock-

This material is available in a variety of domestic and imported species. here are 2 general categories as follows:

  1. Not kiln dried. In many cases we find that wood turners prefer to deal with large blocks and burls (see "Special" link above for a description of burls). This stock is typically used for turning bowls and other vessels. There are no common species or sizes in this stock, but it may include either domestic or imported species and sizes ranging from 3" x 3" x 1 1/2" to 10' x 10' x 6".
  2. Kiln dried stock. If the material is 3 inches thick or less it is sometimes available in squares.  We often have sizes like 3" x 3",   2 1/2" x 2 1/2", or 2" x 2" in common lengths and species. This stock is typically used for turning spindles, plates and small vessels.  Stock above 2" is difficult to dry. We have limited and somewhat erratic inventory of this material. It would be best to check by phone or e-mail before making a trip for availability and price quotes.
