BIRDSEYE HARD MAPLE
Birdseye Maple is not a distinct species. It is almost always seen in Hard Maple, and refers to small swirls in the grain that resemble bird's eyes. There can be quite a bit of difference from one board to another, both in the size of the eyes & the population of eyes. There are many theories on the cause, but nothing definitive has been established.
The value of Birdseye Maple will change depending on color of the board (more sapwood makes it more valuable), population of eyes & whether the board also includes other character like curly or quilting. Availability can be erratic since it isn't practical to select the trees that will contain the character wanted.
